Designing a loyalty membership + payments pass system.
The Problem
Retail loyalty usually lives in an app customers rarely open, and the reward almost never surfaces at the moment that matters: checkout.
NTO wanted to test a lighter model: put loyalty where the phone already goes at the register, Apple Wallet, so members can earn, see their status, and redeem without launching anything.
How might we make loyalty status and rewards effortless to use at the point of sale, using a native Wallet pass?
Constraints & guardrails
Must use Apple Wallet's PassKit pass model, fixed pass types, defined field regions, and system chrome.
Must respect NTO brand guidelines, logos, strip imagery, and colour.
Points and tier change over time and update on the pass via push.
Summary
I designed an Apple Wallet pass system for Northern Trail Outfitters (NTO) that unifies three jobs in a single tap, earning rewards, showing membership status, and redeeming/paying at checkout. The work spans a tiered membership card (Silver → Gold → Platinum), a set of redeemable vouchers, and the companion shopping flow that ties the story together.
A native Wallet card that shows member, reward points, and tier at a glance, its colour shifting Silver → Gold → Platinum as status grows.
A scannable barcode and NFC tap identify the member and earn or redeem points in a single motion at the point of sale.
Coupon-style passes for issued offers, redeemable by scan or a contactless “Hold Near Reader” tap.
Points, tier, and progress-to-next-tier refresh automatically over push, so the pass is always current.
How it works
Screens
Coupon-style Wallet passes for issued offers. Each voucher carries the offer, its expiry, and a redemption method, a scannable barcode for the point of sale, or a contactless Hold Near Reader tap.
NTO Checkout Experience
The shopping flow that ties the pass together, apply a reward voucher, tap the Wallet pass to pay, and watch points and tier progress update in real time.
Shoppers explore new arrivals and add items, a jacket, a hat, straight from the NTO app.
At checkout they can pay with Apple Pay or redeem accrued Reward Points and gift cards.
A single side-button confirmation completes payment, fast, familiar, and secure.
The order is confirmed, points are credited, and the Wallet pass updates its tier and balance over the air.
Behind the Design
Color + progress meter make tier legible without app launches.
Moving the barcode/QR to the card face cut steps at the register.
Persistent card (Generic) vs. redeemable offer (Coupon) mirrors how Wallet actually models these, keeping mental models clean.
Outcome
Designing inside platform constraints PassKit's fixed regions sharpened the hierarchy, every field had to earn its place. Surfacing loyalty at the moment of payment, not in an app, is the real unlock.
